We’re nearing the end of my video series from Future of Utilities: Summit and in this week’s Energy Insight discussion for www.talkingutilities.com, I had the pleasure of speaking with Lennart van Walsum from the Global Solar Council (GSC). As the voice of the solar industry globally, Lennart shared some great insights.
🎢 I loved his description of the “solar coaster” as a way of describing solar booms and busts that track policy and incentive changes, and how momentum is always shifting between regions rather than moving in one direction globally.
🇬🇧 The UK story in particular is one of collapse and revival: an industry that fell from more than 30,000 jobs to fewer than 2,000 when incentives were pulled is now recovering, propelled by #energysecurity and geopolitical pressure toward domestic generation.
☀️ Now however, #energystorage is now inseparable from #solar: Lennart was clear that further #renewable build-out is no longer viable without storage to support grid flexibility and electrification, positioning the two as a single proposition.
Lennart also shared the work that the Solar Energy UK were doing - great to see the increased focus on solar in the UK!
